Ghibah (backbiting) is the act of speaking about someone’s flaws or faults in their absence, even if what is said is true. In Islam, ghibah is a major sin and is strictly prohibited as it can harm social relationships and hurt others’ feelings. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says: “And do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it.” (Quran, Surah Al-Hujurat: 12)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “Ghibah is mentioning something about your brother that he dislikes.” (Hadith, Sahih Muslim) This prohibition emphasizes the importance of guarding one’s tongue, fostering good social relationships, and avoiding actions that may lead to sin or conflict in the community.
